Stains: The Beginning

My goal is to cohesively integrate the experiences of the asylum seekers throughout their journey with the Brooklyn Grange, using natural materials when possible, in order to create artwork. I began to think about things taken and left behind during the journey, and more specifically the concept of home and what that means. Is home a place, a feeling, a group of people? Is home mobile, or stationary? When asylum seekers leave what items were brought along, left behind (by force or choice), and what are the memories and/or experiences that they carry with them forever from their home countries and/or their experiences along the way?

My response is in the form of stained bed sheets using different food items such as strawberries, blueberries, carrots, peas, tomatoes, beets, and even flowers as dyeing materials. Above is a look at one of the four stained sheets I completed.

I hope to experiment more with food items grown at the Brooklyn Grange and expand upon my questions above and the experiences of the asylum seekers as I continue. What a journey!

Danielle Serigano - Garden Proposal

Working with the idea of rerooting after being displaced, as well as inhabiting/traveling through a space, I am developing an experience/design to lead people through the garden, in order to expose the journey of the refugees and the therapeutic qualities of the garden (that it will possess for the exhibition) as a meeting place for RIF in the future.

More to come soon!

WHAT OTHER ARTISTS ARE MAKING

Kristyna & Marek Milde
Homescape, at the exhibition Hills and Valleys of the Sofa Wilderness at Wave Hill, NY, 2014 Aluminum, insulation material, soil, moss, grass, ferns and stones
29 1/2″ x 64″ x 32″ and 29 1/2 x 32″ x 32″

"Kristyna and Marek Milde’s art examines the effects of architecture, design and interior space on how we see and relate to the outside world. In their practice, the Mildes create objects, situations and events that use both organic and artificially constructed elements to confront cultural views and fantasies about nature. Their projects often take the form of do-it-yourself home improvements, revisiting the role of furnishing and decorating. They believe that the interior-based culture prevalent today creates boundaries between the man-made and organic realms, producing a removed perspective of the world. To counteract this disconnect, the artists explore methods for transforming built spaces in ways that reconnect people to the larger environmental contexts of culture, geography and nature. Their work creates a shift when plant material from outdoors is placed inside the gallery space." --Wave Hill Arts
